Construction workers were grim as they discovered mysterious bones in the dirt, and homicide detectives and coroner’s investigators rushed to the scene Thursday in southeast Los Angeles.
News crews flocked to the site as officials and onlookers wondered if workers had stumbled upon a grisly long-ago murder scene.
Authorities finally were able to determine the origin of those mysterious bones.
The remains were those of a cat.
The discovery was made about 9:20 a.m. in the 1000 block of East 23rd Street, said Los Angeles police Officer Drake Madison.
Coroner’s investigators and homicide detectives were sent to the scene and it was later determined they were feline remains.
Officials apparently did not plan to spend any more time to determine how the cat met its demise.
