A woman who was crossing a West Covina street was fatally injured Thursday morning in a hit-and-run crash, authorities said.

The crash was reported around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Azusa and Francisquito avenues, said West Covina police Officer Eddie Flores.

The woman was walking in a crosswalk when a northbound vehicle struck her and kept going, Flores said.

She was taken to the hospital in “very grave” condition, he said. She died about 5:15 a.m., the coroner’s office reported. Her name was withheld, pending family notification.

A section of Azusa Avenue was closed until about 7:15 a.m. while an investigation was conducted.

Police said the suspect vehicle is possibly a dark compact. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police.
