Two suspects were in custody Saturday, including a 17-year- old boy, for allegedly throwing motor oil on undercover officers working a prostitution detail in Pomona.

The assault occurred at 11:40 p.m. Friday in the area of Holt Avenue and Hershey Street, which is part of the Holt Avenue corridor that is a known location for prostitution activity, according to police.

A red Honda Civic drove up to some undercover officers walking on foot in the area and the passenger threw a container of motor oil at them, according to A. Rodriguez of the Pomona Police Department.

The vehicle quickly fled but was stopped by marked police units a short distance away.

The 17-year-old passenger from Ontario, who was not identified because he is a minor, and the driver, 25-year-old David Billalva of Mira Loma, were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault with caustic chemicals and throwing a substance from a vehicle, police said.

Both suspects were booked at the Pomona City Jail.

The undercover officers did not sustain serious injuries as a result of coming into contact with the oil, Rodriguez said.

“This incident was an example of the dangers police officers face while working such details, which require officers to work in an undercover capacity,” said Rodriguez. “This is an inherit risk which Pomona police officers accept as part of our duties in our efforts to improve the quality of life for the citizens in the city of Pomona. The Pomona Police Department is committed to the continued safety of Pomona citizens through the reduction of crime.”
