A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train in west Riverside Friday.
The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was hit about 12:20 p.m. by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad train on tracks just south of Indiana Avenue, crossing Madison Street, according to Riverside police.
Officer Ryan Railsback said the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
“We’re investigating the circumstances,” Railsback said. “BNSF is involved. The trains are stopped.”
He said traffic was impacted along Madison and Indiana, as well as Washington Street to the east.
The tracks were expected to re-open by mid-afternoon.
