A driver suspected of fatally injuring a pedestrian in South Los Angeles and then abandoning his vehicle and running away along with a young boy turned himself in to police Wednesday morning.
Forty-one-year-old Shauntrell Darnell Matthews of Los Angeles turned himself in at about 10:45 a.m. at the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Station, where he was arrested, booked on suspicion of felony hit and run and jailed, officials said.
Matthews had been wanted in connection with a collision that killed 76- year-old Herman Charles Avery Jr. of Inglewood, who was struck about 6:15 p.m. Sunday while crossing Western Avenue at 81st Street, heading west. Avery died at the scene, according to the LAPD.
Police on Tuesday released images of the suspect, hoping members of the public would recognize him.
After the fatal collision, investigators reported that the suspect had a 7- to 9-year-old boy with him when he abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
Matthews was released after posting $50,000 bail and is next due in court on Nov. 22 in downtown Los Angeles, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
