A would-be robber was fatally shot by a clerk while attempting to rob a liquor store with an accomplice in Whittier, authorities said Tuesday.

The robbery attempt occurred around 10 p.m. Monday at Bottle House Liquors at 6015 Norwalk Blvd., the Whittier Police Department reported.

The two suspects entered the store and the clerk saw at least one of them was armed with a handgun, police said. The clerk produced his own handgun and shot one of the suspects, police said.

The wounded suspect died at the scene. The other suspect was unharmed and fled the store, police said.

No arrests were made and no other injuries were reported, police said.

A description of the suspect at large was not immediately available.
