Authorities Thursday said a 71-year-old Kern County man and a 19-year-old Tulare County woman were killed when the pickup truck in which they were riding crashed into a disabled big rig on the Golden State (5) Freeway near Pyramid Lake in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Juan Bojorquez-Valenzuela, 72, and Yaritza Olivares, 19, died at the scene of the crash, which was reported at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday near the Vista Del Lago off-ramp, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

According to the CHP’s preliminary report, a four-seat Toyota Tundra rear-ended a three-axle Peterbilt truck that was stopped in the No. 2 lane due to a mechanical problem.

The Toyota driver and passenger in the left rear seat were taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate to major injuries, the CHP reported. The fatally injured victims were  the right front and right rear passengers.

The driver of the Peterbilt truck suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
