Authorities Wednesday identified a man who was killed in a chain-reaction crash that occurred after he got out of his disabled pickup truck in the carpool lane of the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway in the Chatsworth area.

The crash was reported about 5:50 a.m. Tuesday at Topanga Canyon Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Jose Sanchez, 60, of Santa Clarita died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

According to the preliminary investigation, Sanchez’ pickup truck became disabled on the carpool lane of the westbound freeway and he got out of the vehicle, the CHP reported. That’s when a westbound car hit the pickup truck, and the impact pushed the truck into Sanchez, who was flung over the center divider and into the path of an eastbound motorcycle, which struck him, the CHP reported.

The car driver and the motorcyclist were treated for injuries that were not believed life-threatening. Three lanes were closed in each direction on the 118 Freeway while crews worked to clear the scene.
