Two young men were arrested by sheriff’s deputies during the attempted burglary at a Lakewood apartment, a lieutenant reported.

Akkeli Shanae Ortega, 21, and 20-year-old Marcelle Franklin were nabbed as they exited an apartment in the 20800 block of Arline Avenue about 12:15 p.m. Saturday, said sheriff’s Lt. Joseph Badali.

Deputies responded to a burglary in progress call and Deputy Ryan Peacock learned from the victim that two black males, one wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, removed the window screen from the apartment and then broke inside.

Peacock then spotted Ortega, who was wearing the red sweatshirt, and Franklin who was wearing a black jacket leaving through the apartment complex’s gate, Badali said Sunday.

When Peacock tried to stop the two men Franklin allegedly dropped a blue bag and ran toward Centralia Street. The bag contained jewelry, cash, electronics, collectable coins and car keys, Badali continued.

Minutes after Franklin was captured, Deputy Michael Perea caught Ortega near the apartment, Badali said. Both suspects were later identified by the victim, he said.

When the deputies contacted the victim, he told them he was at Arlington National Cemetery in Riverside visiting his son’s grave, a Navy veteran who was killed in an on-duty accident five years ago.

The victim then identified the recovered items as coming from his apartment, Badali said. The suspects had in their possession a knapsack allegedly taken from the apartment to carry away the stolen loot. The knapsack had been given to the victim by Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a non- profit group the helps family members of fallen military members.

Ortega and Franklin were booked on first degree residential burglary charges and were each being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, Badali said. They are currently scheduled to head to Bellflower court on Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Anyone with information on these two suspects was asked to call the Lakewood station detectives at (562) 623-3500.
