A 55-year-old man who threatened to jump Thursday from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro was taken into custody after spending more than seven hours on the span.
Firefighters were dispatched to the bridge just before 7 a.m. and responded with ground and boat crews, according to Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Multiple air bags were put into place, but the man, whose name was withheld, was safely taken into custody by 2 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, she said.
In addition to the LAFD, port police and the California Highway Patrol assisted in the rescue effort, Bastman said.
Bridge traffic was halted in both directions and a SigAlert remained in effect until the man surrendered.
