A man was shot 30 minutes after the New Year arrived, and died in the early hours Monday in Long Beach.

Officers dispatched about 12:30 a.m. to the area of Sixth Street and Temple Avenue in response to an “assault with a deadly weapon” call. They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and lower body, said Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department.

Gerald Jackson III, 22, of Long Beach died at a hospital a short time later, the coroner’s office reported.

“A male suspect was reported to have fled the scene, but no other details are available and the investigation is ongoing,” she said.
