A driver who was fleeing police Tuesday morning in a Honda Civic impaled the car on a guardrail, injuring his female passenger and causing the closure of an off-ramp on the northbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Santa Fe Springs.
The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the Telegraph Road exit, authorities said. It left part of the guardrail wedged in the passenger-side door.
The driver crashed into the guardrail while trying to exit the freeway as he was being pursued by Whittier police, according to reports from the scene. The man fled foot but was caught a short time later and taken into custody.
His female passenger suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to reports from the scene.
The Telegraph Road off-ramp was expected to be closed until at least 6 a.m., the CHP reported.
