Authorities Wednesday identified a young man who was electrocuted when the basket of a tree-trimming boom in which he was working came into contact with a power line and became electrified in South Los Angeles.

The accident occurred about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of 87th Place, said Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Juan Figueroa, 22, died at the scene, the coroner’s office reported. His home town was not known.

A 17-year-old boy who was working in the basket with Figueroa jumped onto a corrugated metal building 15 to 20 feet below and was hospitalized in fair condition, Bastman said.

Rescuers worked to make contact with Figueroa, but their efforts were hampered by the live electrical lines. They determined he was dead in the boom basket, Bastman said.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was notified, and a spokesman for the utility said Figueroa was a private tree trimmer and not an LADWP employee. About 10 homes lost power until about 8:30 p.m., the spokesman said.
