A motorist killed in a fiery crash south of Corona went off of Interstate 15 and crossed another road before landing in a ditch, where the SUV erupted in flames, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

Saul Flores, 23, of Corona died Saturday night in the area of De Palma and Horsethief Canyon roads.

CHP Officer Dan Olivas said Flores was at the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler going south on I-15 about 9 p.m. when he veered onto the right shoulder, then dropped down an embankment and plowed through a fence.

“The vehicle continued forward and traveled across De Palma Road, traveled off the roadway and down (another) embankment,” Olivas said. “The vehicle collided with the embankment and came to rest on its wheels.”

According to Olivas, the Jeep caught fire but passersby were able to pull the gravely injured Flores out of the SUV and start CPR before Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later.
