A portion of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu was shut off Sunday morning as deputies searched oceanfront houses for a man who had stolen a car.

The suspect was able to elude deputies in the 20700 block of Pacific Coast Highway, according to a watch sergeant at the sheriff’s Lost Hills/Malibu station.

Deputies spotted a man at about 7:15 a.m. seated in a vehicle, ran the license plates and discovered that the vehicle had been stolen, he said.

“He (the suspect) ran out of the car and down the beach,” he said.

The search, on PCH east of Las Flores Canyon Road, was shut down about 7:45 a.m., he said.
