A 23-year-old North Hollywood man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking on the Ventura (101) Freeway in Valley Village Friday, authorities said.
Eric Martin was walking in a northerly direction across the southbound lanes and stepped directly into the path of a Land Rover LR3 driven by a 50- year-old Topanga man about 6 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver was unable to avoid a collision, according to the CHP. He called 911 to report what happened.
Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was not immediately clear why Martin had been on the freeway.
The collision shut down all but one southbound lane, causing substantial traffic delays during the morning commute.
