A parolee was fatally shot by Riverside police during a confrontation that occurred as they were serving an arrest warrant at his Jurupa Valley residence, authorities said Friday.

The officer-involved shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the 9900 block of Willowbrook Road, near Fairford Street, according to Riverside police and Riverside County sheriff’s officials.

Officer Ryan Railsback said SWAT members were sent to the location to arrest the ex-con, who was not immediately identified. The parolee had been wanted since last Aug. 26 for allegedly trying to shoot his ex-girlfriend during a dispute at her home in the 4200 block of Langston Place on the east end of Riverside, Railsback said. The woman was not hurt.

Detectives had been searching for the suspect since that time and finally narrowed down his whereabouts, culminating in the warrant service Thursday, the officer said.

As officers attempted to arrest the felon, he allegedly resisted, and officers opened fire, mortally wounding him, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Willison. It was unclear whether the man pulled a gun or other weapon on the officers.

Willison said paramedics were summoned and attempted to revive the suspect, without success.

No officers were injured.

Sheriff’s detectives took over the investigation because the shooting happened in Jurupa Valley, which contracts with the sheriff’s department for law enforcement services.

The officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, per Riverside Police Department policy.
