A man in his 40s was struck and killed by at least one vehicle on the Long Beach (710) Freeway Sunday evening in South Gate, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash on the southbound 710 Freeway at Firestone Boulevard was reported at 7:24 p.m., CHP Officer Alex Rubio said.

It’s unknown why the man was walking on or near the freeway, Rubio said.

The victim died at the scene, Rubio said. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Officers initially shut down all four lanes but have since reopened the number 4 lane, Rubio said.

The other lanes remain closed while officers investigate.

One car stopped at the scene, but Rubio said he didn’t know if the driver was a witness or had hit the man.

Anyone who witnessed the accident was asked to call the CHP’s Dispatch Center at (323) 259-3400. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
