Police Monday sought the public’s help in identifying several suspects who fled a smash-and-grab robbery attempt at a Glendale Galleria jewelry store after a security guard fired two shots, which panicked some mall shoppers who heard the gunfire.

One suspect, 20-year-old Kamal Key, was detained by the guard during the robbery attempt about 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Bhindi jewelers at the shopping mall at 2148 Galleria Way, according to Glendale Police Department Sgt. Dan Suttles.

The guard interrupted the suspects, who entered the store with mallets and started smashing glass cases. He fired two shots when one of the suspects turned and ran toward him, Suttles said.

No one was injured.

Police arrived and took Key into custody, according to the sergeant.

“Surveillance photos indicate there were four total suspects,” Suttles said. “Three suspects went into the mall, while the fourth remained with a car that was parked nearby.”

Investigators released photos of the suspects and the car they used in the hope that someone will come forward with information.

Anyone with information about the suspects was urged to call the Glendale Police Department at (818) 548-4911. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
