A 10-year-old Lake Elsinore boy died from injuries suffered when he was struck by a pickup truck whose driver remained at large Wednesday.
The hit-and-run happened about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Langstaff Street and Sumner Avenue in Lake Elsinore, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Sgt. James Woodland said the victim, identified by family members as Anthony Ochoa, was walking with his sister through a marked crosswalk when a red pickup, possibly a Chevy, ran into him.
According to witnesses, the child rolled onto the hood of the pickup and landed on the windshield. The driver slowed long enough for the unconscious boy to slide off the vehicle, then the suspect sped away, witnesses said.
“Upon arrival, (deputies) located the pedestrian, who had suffered significant injuries,” Woodland said.
The boy, a student at Elsinore Elementary School, was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to Woodland, the driver was described as a Hispanic man, but no other details were available.
The pickup had chrome wheels and reportedly sustained front-end damage, including a cracked windshield, because of the hit-and-run.
