Police and city firefighters evacuated a church Sunday evening in a building also housing several small businesses after a six-foot by six-foot ceiling beam inside the Westlake church split causing the church to be possibly become structurally compromised, said a Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman.

The call to firefighters about the structural problem at the church at 2720 W. 7th St. in the MacArthur Park area came in about 6:40 p.m., fire spokeswoman Amy Bastman said.

The building in question is two-stories high and the church sits on the second floor over the businesses, Bastman continued.

Inspectors from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety were called to the scene to evaluate the structural integrity of the entire building, Bastman said.

No injuries were reported and firefighters will remain at the scene during the safety inspection, she added.
