Four students were injured Monday near Paramount High School when they were struck by a pickup truck whose 19-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving.

The victims were hit about 3 p.m. on Downey Avenue near Rosecrans Avenue, according to Sgt. Travis Morrow of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lakewood Station.

Witnesses said the driver was speeding southbound and collided with another vehicle, lost control of the pickup and plowed into three girls and a boy.

All four were found on the sidewalk, injured, Morrow said.

Two patients were taken to one trauma center, and two to another, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Gustavo Medina.

Morrow said he was not at liberty to release the ages and conditions of the students and could not say where they went to school.

According to a report from the scene, they were all thought to be high school-aged.

The driver, who remained at the scene, was identified as Saul Martinez, who was arrested on suspicion of felony reckless driving, Morrow said.

Martinez was not suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It was unclear if he was a high school student and his place of residence was not immediately disclosed.
