A suspected DUI driver crashed his vehicle into a utility pole in Brea Monday, breaking the pole into two pieces and prompting police to shut down a busy road, authorities said.

The crash happened about 2 a.m. on Lambert Road around Puente Street, Brea police Sgt. Tony Barbosa said.

The impact cut the pole into two pieces, and the part that remained attached to the power lines pulled them toward the street, Barbosa said.

Southern California Edison crews cut power to the lines and re-routed the circuits to maintain power for customers, he said. They were working to replace the pole, which could keep Lambert Road closed through the morning rush.

The 24-year-old La Habra man driving the vehicle was not injured but was arrested on suspicion of DUI, Barbosa said.
