Grief counselors were on hand at a Santa Ana high school Monday to help students cope with the deaths of two classmates in a single-vehicle rollover crash in Tustin that also injured others in the car.
Tustin police were notified about 8 p.m. Sunday that passenger Jason Anguiano, 17, of Santa Ana, had died at Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, Sgt. M. Van Cleef told City News Service. Pedro Fuentes, 17, of Santa Ana, was also a passenger in the crashed car and was pronounced dead at the scene, coroner’s officials said earlier.
The crash occurred at about 2:50 p.m. Friday in the 16000 block of Legacy Road, across from the Amalfi Apartment complex.
Grief counselors were made available to students and staff at Century High School in Santa Ana, where Anguiano and Fuentes were students.
Four males and three females were in the Infiniti M37 at the time of the accident, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz said. Six of the people in the car were 17 years old, while the other was a 20-year-old woman, Kurtz said.
All of the teens were believed to be students at Century High School.
The Infiniti was westbound on Legacy Road “when it veered off the roadway and collided with a cement post,” Tustin police Lt. Robert Wright said.
The vehicle then spun out of control and slammed into a moving van that was legally parked along the eastbound side of the road, Wright said.
“The collision with the moving van caused the Infiniti to roll over,” he said.
The injured victims were taken to hospitals, Wright said.
The vehicle involved has seating for up to five people but there were seven people in the crashed car, police said.
A GoFundMe page was established by the Fuentes family to help cover funeral expenses.
“He was an amazing loving son, brother and friend. Pedro will always be remembered as caring, humble and full of happiness. Most importantly he always had faith in God and followed his steps,” according to the family’s statement on the page.
