A 22-year-old student was free on bail Tuesday after police arrested him for allegedly having an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun in his dorm room at Biola University in La Mirada.

Jason Michael Roberts, a senior at Biola and a resident of Red Bluff, was arrested about 2 p.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Deputies from the sheriff’s Norwalk Station seized the weapons and arrested Roberts after being “alerted to potential firearms violations on the Biola University campus by .. campus safety personnel,” according to a sheriff’s department statement.

The recovered firearms, which included a 9 mm handgun, were not registered. Roberts was booked on suspicion of possession of a firearm on a university campus, possession of a weapon on a university campus, manufacture of an assault weapon and possession of an unregistered firearm — all felonies, officials said.

“Norwalk Station detectives conducted an investigation, including an interview with the suspect, and found there was not threat to the campus’ students or faculty,” according to the sheriff’s department.

Roberts was released from custody on Saturday afternoon after posting $200,000 bail, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
