The suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting in Gardena was wanted in a shooting, authorities said Thursday.
The shooting occurred at 2:24 p.m. Wednesday in the 13200 block of Van Ness Avenue, after officers responded to a shooting call in the area of Van Ness and El Segundo Boulevard, according to Gardena police.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which was assisting Gardena police in the shooting investigation.
Detectives learned Gardena officers responded to a shots fired call and found the suspect running south on Van Ness Avenue from the location, said Deputy Dangelo Robinson of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
Multiple witnesses told responding officers that the man they saw running was involved in the shooting, Robinson said. Officers began a foot pursuit and attempted to make contact with the suspect on the 13200 block of Van Ness Avenue at which time an officer involved shooting occurred.
The suspect was struck at least once in the upper body, Robinson said.
A firearm was located at the scene but at this time authorities are unsure if the suspect discharged his firearm at the officers, according to Robinson.
No officers or civilians were injured.
