A deputy shot a homeless man at a transient camp north of Palm Desert Sunday, as the man reportedly wielded a weapon during an attempted arrest for an outstanding warrant

The shooting was just after 8 a.m. on Varner Road west of Washington Street, next to the Thousand Trails RV Camp, said Deputy Robin Flores of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The deputy was conducting an area check at a transient camp, encountered the suspect and determined that he had an outstanding arrest warrant, she said.

When the deputy tried to arrest the suspect, the man advanced toward the deputy with a weapon, Flores said. But she did not disclose what type of weapon the suspect was reportedly carrying.

The deputy then shot the man, but it was not disclosed how many shots were filed, how many times the suspect was hit, or where the suspect was struck. He was hospitalized, but his condition and name were not disclosed by deputies.

Varner Road from the Thousand Trails RV Camp to 38th Avenue was to remain closed to traffic for several hours while the investigation was underway, Flores said.
