A 48-year-old suspected drunken driver on probation was taken into custody following an approximately 20-minute chase in Pomona Tuesday.
A woman called police about 1:20 p.m. to report that Anton Laron Mitchell may have been robbed and was being held against his will, said Pomona police Sgt. Patrick O’Malley.
“The caller was still on the phone with Mitchell and wasn’t making any sense,” O’Malley said. “She could hear Mitchell stating things like `He was going to give up’ and `They were going to kill him.”’
Officers arrived in the area of Orange Grove Avenue and La Verne Street and located a blue 2001 Saturn, which was described by the caller, O’Malley said, adding that a traffic stop was conducted on the car and that it had failed to yield.
Officers pursued the vehicle in the “middle portion” of Pomona, O’Malley said, at slower speeds for approximately 20 minutes.
“Pomona police couldn’t determine during the pursuit if the suspect was being held against his will, or actually driving the vehicle, due to the tinted windows and inconsistent information.
The pursuit continued south to Mission Boulevard and then west on Mission Boulevard, passing the Pomona Police Department.
“The suspect stated that he wanted to go see his probation officer, so the Pomona probation office was placed on lockdown temporarily,” O’Malley said.
The suspect then turned north on Curran Place and west on Second Street. He then drove behind a business and then back onto Second Street. At that time, officer performed a pursuit intervention technique maneuver on the vehicle, ending the pursuit.
Mitchell was arrested on suspicion of felony evading, drunken driving and probation violation.
No one was injured.
