A motorist was killed early Wednesday morning in a fiery crash in Fullerton, police said.

The crash occurred about 1 a.m. near Harbor and Brea boulevards.

The driver was northbound on Harbor in a 2007 Toyota Sienna, approaching the intersection known as the “Brea Y,” when the minivan veered off the road, slammed into a signal pole on an island and then spun out of control, said Fullerton police Sgt. Jon Radus. The vehicle then slammed into a traffic signal box before ending up on an embankment near a building under construction, he said.

When officers arrived, the minivan was “engulfed in flames,” Radus said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Because of the condition of the remains, positive identification was expected to take some time, the sergeant said.

The driver’s speed and possible use of drugs or alcohol were under investigation as potential causes of the crash, Radus said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was encouraged to call investigators at (714) 738-5313, or Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS to provide an anonymous tip.

Southbound Harbor Boulevard, from Valencia Mesa to Valley View Drive, as well as southbound Brea Boulevard from Lemon Street to Harbor Boulevard and northbound Harbor Boulevard at Valley View Drive, were expected to remain closed to traffic until at least 11:30 a.m.
