A 39-year-old woman is in custody after a series of coincidences involving an alert husband, a star YouTuber and a group of good Samaritans led to her arrest on suspicion of grand theft auto.
It all started at 10:15 a.m. Saturday in the 1600 block of Abbot Kinney Boulevard, where a man riding a bicycle spotted a woman driving his wife’s stolen SUV, according to Los Angeles police and media reports.
Officers said the SUV was reported stolen a week ago in Santa Monica.
The man tried to get the woman to stop, and when she didn’t, he threw his bike in front of the vehicle, according to YouTube vlogger Matthew Santoro, who videotaped the scene and posted it on social media,
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Erica Alicia Puig, then got out of the SUV and fled on foot.
Police said several witnesses chased the woman down the street and held her until officers arrived.
“The woman seen running away from the stolen car has been taken into custody,” Los Angeles police said in a Twitter post. “Thanks to all the community members who helped out. This has, and will always be, a team effort.”
Puig is being held on $25,000 bail.
