A man suspected in a fatal beating in Moreno Valley was being held without bail Monday.
Victor Mendoza, 29, was arrested Sunday and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of murder.
According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Ben Ramirez, Mendoza allegedly killed 65-year-old Larry Valverde in the 23700 block of Sunnymead Boulevard during the early morning hours Sunday. The circumstances and a possible motive were not disclosed.
Ramirez said deputies were called to the location Saturday to conduct a missing person investigation and discovered the crime scene.
Mendoza was immediately wanted for questioning, and he was tracked down and taken into custody for an unrelated offense while the investigation continued, according to Ramirez.
Valverde’s remains were found about noon Sunday in an overgrown field in the 23100 block of Sunnymead. Ramirez said the body showed “obvious trauma” indicating foul play, and Mendoza was re-arrested and booked on suspicion of murder.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777.
