A 60-year-old transient who was shot while allegedly robbing a Santa Ana restaurant is suspected in multiple stickups, police said Wednesday as they released surveillance video in hopes of tracking down the assailant who opened fire on the gun-toting suspect from the eatery’s drive-thru window.

Steve Rodriguez, who remains hospitalized, has been linked to at least three other robberies and a carjacking in addition to the weekend crime at the Cozy Corner restaurant, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

Police responded to a call of an armed robbery and shooting at the eatery at 426 N. Harbor Blvd. about 12:45 a.m. Saturday.

Rodriguez, who was armed with a black revolver, was allegedly in the process of robbing the restaurant when shots rang out from a silver Honda Accord stopped in the drive-thru lane, wounding the suspect in the upper body, Bertagna said. There were several people in the Honda, which sped off, and police are still looking for the shooter.

Rodriguez was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, but is expected to survive, Bertagna said.

It’s unknown what motivated Rodriguez’s attackers, Bertagna said.

“We’re looking into all theories,” the corporal said. “Did this guy have a beef with this individual or individuals, were these people specifically targeting this individual or were these people there to rob the place and saw this guy and got mad? Or is it gangs protecting the neighborhood?”

Investigators say Rodriguez is also a suspect in:

— the May 20 robbery of a young couple at 1200 N. Jackson St.;

— a carjacking, also on May 20, in Rosita Park;

— a food truck robbery at 17th Street and Hazard Avenue on May 21; and

— a Boost Mobile Store heist at 17th Street and Harbor Boulevard on May 22.

Detectives believe Rodriguez may also be responsible for additional unreported robberies, Bertagna said.

Anyone with information relevant to the case was asked to email SAPD robbery detective Greaver at dgreaver@santa-ana-org. Orange County Crime Stoppers will accept anonymous tips at (855) TIP-OCCS.
