A 37-year-old man suspected of driving while intoxicated caused a five-car chain crash that severely injured another driver in Palm Desert, a sheriff’s sergeant said Saturday.
The crash occurred at 12:39 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Fred Waring Drive and Monterey Avenue, said Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jorge Ramirez.
The suspect’s car slammed into a Toyota Yaris, which then rear-ended a Toyota Highlander, he said.
The suspect’s Nissan Altima also hit a Honda Civic, causing it to crash into a Ford F-150.
The driver of the Toyota Yaris suffered major injuries and the suspect minor injuries, while three other drivers involved were unscathed, Ramirez said.
Three of the five vehicles sustained major damage, he said.
While deputies were investigating the crash, the Altima’s driver, Jeremy Tellez, 37, of Palm Desert, fled on foot but later returned to the scene, according to Ramirez.
“It was determined [that] Tellez showed signs of driving while impaired with alcohol and/or drugs,” Ramirez said.
He was arrested and booked into the Indio Jail on suspicion of felony DUI and felony hit-and-run causing injury.
