A 33-year-old San Jacinto man was killed Tuesday in a three-vehicle wreck in Nuevo triggered when he steered into opposing traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened about 6:20 a.m. on the Ramona Expressway, just east of Hansen Avenue, the CHP said.

According to Officer Dan Olivas, the victim, whose identity was not released, was at the wheel of a 2018 Ford Escape going westbound on Ramona.

Olivas said that as the compact SUV passed Hansen, it crossed the double yellow lines and drifted into eastbound lanes.

The driver of a 2002 Ford F-250 pickup towing a trailer encountered the Escape coming straight at him and turned right to avoid a collision, at which point the SUV clipped the trailer and continued toward a 2014 Dodge Charger, traveling a short distance behind the pickup, Olivas said.

He said the Escape crashed head-on into the Dodge.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived minutes later and pronounced the Escape driver dead at the scene.

The 28-year-old Lake Elsinore woman driving the Dodge suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment.

The pickup driver was not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation.
