A 53-year-old landscaper was killed at a Lake Elsinore residence, and his assailant remained at large Wednesday.

Juan De Leon Lopez died Tuesday following an attack outside a home in the 16000 block of Holborow Avenue, near Hague Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Wally Clear said deputies were called to the location about 2 p.m. Tuesday to investigate reports of an assault.

When the patrolmen arrived, paramedics were attempting life-saving treatment on Lopez, who had suffered major “head trauma,” Clear said.

“According to the homeowner, Lopez was one of two men hired for property maintenance, and the second unidentified male fled the scene prior to the arrival of emergency personnel,” the sergeant said.

The victim was pronounced dead by paramedics at 2:30 p.m.

Sheriff’s Central Homicide unit detectives took over the investigation.

Possible circumstances behind the deadly assault were not disclosed, and sheriff’s officials declined to identify the alleged assailant.

Deputies asked anyone with information to call the sheriff’s Lake Elsinore station at (951) 245-3300.
