A gang member on a bicycle Saturday led Pomona police on a pursuit through a residential area where he allegedly discarded a firearm and ran through yards before officers caught him, authorities said.

Officers were conducting a gang suppression operation about 4 p.m. in the 700 block of West Holt Avenue when they tried to stop Pomona resident Darryl Martinez, 20, who was riding a bicycle, police Corporal J. Hernandez said.

The known gang member was wanted for vehicle code violations, Hernandez said.

“Suspect Martinez began fleeing on his bicycle actively evading officers,” Hernandez said. Martinez rode into an alley, abandoned the bicycle and ran away.

“Martinez discarded a loaded firearm in the bushes where he abandoned his bicycle,” Hernandez said. He climbed over fences and ran through yards.

“Officers were able to locate Martinez in a residential yard where he was taken into custody without incident,” the corporal said.

Martinez was booked into the Pomona jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics and a firearm and having an unregistered firearm, Hernandez said.

He was held in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
