A man allegedly armed with a handgun was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Pico Rivera Thursday morning, authorities said.

The fatal shooting occurred about 2 a.m. in the 7100 block of Pico Vista Road, according to Deputy Dangelo Robinson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies were in pursuit of the suspect’s vehicle when he crashed and shots were fired by deputies at the man’s car, according to authorities and reports from the scene.

“The suspect fled on foot, armed with a handgun,” sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza told KNX 1070.

The driver fled on foot and a second deputy-involved shooting occurred a few blocks from the site of the crash, reportedly near the man’s home, according to KNX.

The man, reportedly in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld, pending family notification. A handgun believed to have been in his possession was recovered by deputies, Mendoza said. No deputies were injured.

The man’s mother told KNX she was at the shooting scene.

“I didn’t think they were going to shoot,” she said. “Next thing I heard, it seemed like six gunshots.”

A neighbor said the man may have been distraught over the recent death of a friend.
