An armed man was shot by UC Riverside police near the campus early Sunday morning and was hospitalized in critical condition.
Both UC and Riverside city police received calls that shots had been fired in the 600 block of West Blaine Street, a neighborhood adjacent to the university and near its Child Development Center, police said in a news release.
UCR officers were first on the scene and found a man walking north on Watkins Drive just east of West Blaine Street.
When officers attempted to engage the man, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and was shot by police, according to Riverside City police Officer Ryan Railsback.
UC officers ultimately arrested the man with the help of Riverside city police officers.
Police found the suspect had been in possession of two firearms, along with a third improvised firearm, Railsback said.
The suspect was not publicly identified, and Railsback said he was not a student and not affiliated with the university.
The shooting occurred off campus, but within the UC police department’s one mile patrol area beyond the campus boundaries. UC police are accredited law enforcement under state law.
