A 23-year-old man suspected of wielding a handgun with a high-capacity magazine during the robbery of a liquor store in Garden Grove was in custody Thursday.

Officers were sent just before midnight Wednesday to K & M Liquor at 9510 Katella Ave. to investigate a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred, according to Garden Grove Police Lt. Carl Whitney.

“A male suspect entered the store and removed a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband,” Whitney said. “The suspect demanded money from the clerk. The clerk gave the suspect approximately $500 in cash. The suspect fled the location on foot and was last seen walking southbound away from the business.”

At about 1:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to investigate a report of a man brandishing a handgun in the area of Brookhurst Street and Chapman Avenue, Whitney said.

“The suspect threatened a clerk at the Luxor Restaurant at 12015 Brookhurst Street,” Whitney said. “Officers arrived within two minutes and the suspect was located nearby. The suspect was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm concealed in his waistband. This suspect matched the description of the earlier robbery and was positively identified. The suspect is a convicted felon and said he did the robbery to obtain cash to pay for court fines/fees related to other criminal cases.”

The suspect, identified as Ty Minhgat Phan of Garden Grove, was booked at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery and other felony charges, Whitney said.

He was being held without bail, according online inmate records.
