A man who tried to steal two vehicles in Perris was struck and killed by a motorist who left the scene, authorities said Saturday.
The victim was identified as Christian Chavez, 23, of Riverside, the Riverside County coroner’s office said.
Chavez was standing in the middle of the westbound lane of Cajalco Road east of Gustin Road at 9:40 p.m. Friday when a 2008 Infiniti G35 driven by 23-year-old Evenni Varela of Riverside approached and Varela tried to steer around him, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon said.
The left side of the vehicle struck Chavez and Varela stopped along the right shoulder, Licon said. Passenger Magaly Mata, 28, of Perris got out to check on the pedestrian and Chavez got in and tried to carjack the vehicle.
Varala turned off the ignition but was unable to put the gear selector into park so the car rolled across the eastbound lane of Cajalco Road and struck a chain-link fence, the sergeant said. She got out of the car and Chavez tried to start the car.
Another motorist stopped an SUV on the shoulder and Chavez tried to get into that vehicle, Licon said. The driver accelerated away and Chavez fell into the westbound lane of Cajalco Road where he was struck by another vehicle, the driver of which left the scene.
Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
