A 34-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday to a gang-related murder in Anaheim nearly five years ago.
Jose Enrique Canul pleaded guilty to murder and admitted sentencing enhancements for gang activity and gun use. A special circumstances allegation for gang activity, which would have guaranteed a life sentence without the possibility of parole, was dismissed, according to court records.
Canul was one of four defendants to be charged in the Oct. 18, 2013, killing of 38-year-old Angel Jesus Lopez Valladares of Anaheim. Valladares was beaten and then shot after getting into an argument that escalated into a fight in the 600 block of East Eton Place, according to Anaheim police.
Canul is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 26.
Joel Avila, 24, pleaded guilty on Feb. 25, 2016, to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Mario Alberto Flores, 33, pleaded guilty June 19 to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Alberto Canul, 32, is scheduled to return to court Sept. 24. He is charged with murder with a special circumstance allegation that the slaying was the result of gang activity, with sentencing enhancement allegations for a gang member’s vicarious discharge of a gun causing great bodily injury.
