A 39-year-old felon pleaded guilty Thursday and was immediately sentenced to 16 months in prison for leading police on a high-speed chase in Santa Ana with his 18-month-old child and the toddler’s mother along for the ride.
Mark Anthony Aquino pleaded guilty to felony counts of evading police while driving recklessly, evading police and driving against traffic, child abuse and endangerment, as well as two misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, according to court records.
Santa Ana police attempted to stop Aquino for a traffic violation about 9:35 p.m. on May 11 in the 2600 block of South Bristol Street, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. He led police on a chase through a residential neighborhood at a high rate of speed until he drove into a cul-de-sac in the 2300 block of South Spruce Street, where police boxed him in, Bertagna said.
He bailed from the vehicle and was quickly caught by police, Bertagna said.
Aquino has a lengthy criminal record. He pleaded guilty to forgery and burglary in December 2008 and was sentenced to two years behind bars. He was convicted of joyriding in Los Angeles County in June 2008, and of being a felon in possession of a gun in San Diego County in October 2014.
In the most recent case, he pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for sale, possession of a gun by a felon and possession of counterfeit card-making equipment, all felonies, and was sentenced to three years in prison in December 2016.
