Police: Alcohol Apparent Factor in Crash That Killed Two in Riverside

One of two motorists killed in a two-vehicle collision last week at a Riverside intersection consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel and running a red light, authorities said Wednesday.

Marian Ibrahim, 21, died at the scene of the crash last Thursday night at Cypress and La Sierra avenues. Corey Rees, 27, died at Riverside Community Hospital about four hours later. Both were Riverside residents.

According to Riverside police Sgt. Brian Smith, the ensuing investigation revealed that Rees had consumed alcohol before driving, though the quantity and circumstances were not disclosed.

Rees was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero going eastbound on Cypress about 11:30 p.m. when he approached a red traffic signal but failed to stop, Smith said.

Smith said Ibrahim was driving her 2009 Kia Spectra south on La Sierra and entered the intersection on a green light. Rees’ Mitsubishi slammed into the passenger side of the Kia at an undetermined speed, causing both vehicles to spin out of control into the front yard of a house, according to Smith.

The investigation is continuing, Smith said.
