Coroner’s officials Saturday released the name of a 30-year-old motorist who was killed in a rollover crash in Gardena.
The victim was identified as Devon Smith of Torrance, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Officers responded just before 2 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a crash at 166th Street and Normandie Avenue and found an SUV overturned against a gate in the parking lot of Diana’s Mexican Food Products at 16529 S. Normandie Ave., according to Sgt. Mark Thompson, the Gardena Police Department’s traffic bureau supervisor.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2009 BMW SUV containing one male white was driving northbound (on) Normandie Avenue,” Thompson said.
“Upon crossing 166th Street, the vehicle for unknown reasons struck the west curb of Normandie Avenue, crossed the sidewalk, then into a wrought-iron gate. The vehicle came to rest upside down against the gate,” he said.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel freed Smith, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Thompson said. It was unclear if speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
Normandie Avenue between Gardena Boulevard and 168th Street was closed in both directions following the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the crash was urged to call Gardena Police Department Traffic Investigator Toshio Hirai at (310) 217-6135 or Thompson at (310) 217-6183.
