A man wearing what appeared to be a Halloween costume crawled atop a fence on a Hollywood (170) Freeway pedestrian bridge in the North Hollywood area Wednesday, snarling traffic for hours until he was taken into custody.
Police and fire crews responded shortly after 9 a.m. to a pedestrian bridge over the 170 Freeway near Whitsett Avenue on a report of a possible jumper.
When they arrived, they found a man wearing bright purple clothing with a large green blanket over his head, giving him the appearance of Batman’s arch-nemesis the Joker, although it could have also been a disco costume. He was sitting near the top of the bridge fence, and fire crews placed a large airbag on the ground beneath him and tried to get a rope around him to prevent him from falling.
Authorities initially shut down four lanes of the southbound freeway, but later shut down all southbound lanes starting at the Golden State (5) Freeway. Some lanes were reopened by late morning.
After about two hours of negotiations, the man was taken into custody, according to Los Angeles police, and all freeway lanes were reopened around midday.
