One person was killed in a fiery collision on the northbound Costa Mesa (55) Freeway just south of the Corona Del Mar (73) Freeway, authorities said Monday.

Witnesses told the California Highway Patrol at 11:20 p.m. Sunday that what appeared to be a small vehicle was on fire in the fast lane of the transition, the CHP said. No one was seen outside the vehicle. An abandoned truck was found on the transition road nearby.

A body that appeared to be female was found inside the black burned-out 2004 Toyota Corolla sedan, CHP Sgt. M. Stoney said.

A man who was driving a gray 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup truck was arrested on suspicion of DUI, he said.

The CHP shut down the Costa Mesa Freeway at 11:35 p.m. and Costa Mesa police shut down the Fair Drive onramp to the transition at 11:55 p.m. All lanes were reopened about 3 a.m., Stoney said.
