Riverside County sheriff’s deputies Thursday engaged in a standoff with a suspect in Wildomar, prompting evacuations and road closures before the suspect surrendered after several hours.

The standoff began about 1 p.m. in the area of Clinton Keith and Smith Ranch roads, according to sheriff’s officials.

The suspect and circumstances were unclear, with officials only emphasizing the need for motorists to avoid the area.

According to the sheriff’s department, the activity was isolated to a residential area just north of Clinton Keith Road.

Homes in the area were evacuated for public safety as deputies deployed, and Smith Ranch Road was closed to traffic, according to reports from the scene.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics were staging two blocks from the location, and there were unconfirmed reports that someone had been injured.

About 9 p.m., the sheriff’s department reported that the standoff was over.

“The incident has come to a peaceful resolution,” the department tweeted. “The individual involved in this incident surrendered to deputies after several hours of negotiating. No injuries resulted from this incident.”
