Charges were filed Thursday against a probationer accused of stealing more than $700 worth of tires from a Hemet business.

Jesse Alan Moll, 27, faces a misdemeanor theft count and felony probation violations. He’s being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta and is slated to make his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon at the Banning Justice Center.

According to Hemet police Lt. Eric Dickson, the defendant had several new tires put on his vehicle at the Les Schwab Tire Center in the 3800 block of Florida Avenue on the afternoon of Dec. 28.

“Moll gave the store false information and had false plates on the vehicle when he ordered … tires for the vehicle,” Dickson alleged.

The convicted felon returned to the tire center before closing time — after the tires had been affixed — and used an extra key to access his vehicle, in which he drove away without paying for the work, the lieutenant alleged.

Investigators examined security surveillance photographs and spoke with witnesses at the scene, eventually confirming the alleged thief’s identity, according to the lieutenant.

Detectives went to Moll’s residence in the 1700 block of Beacon Court on Monday and spotted the vehicle parked in front of the property, Dickson said. The defendant was questioned at the scene and taken into custody without a struggle.

According to court records, Moll has prior convictions for burglary, trespassing, conspiracy to commit a felony and possession of controlled substances.
