A suspect in a violent sexual assault of a woman on a bus bench in Santa Ana was in custody Friday.

Nick Alvarez Hernandez, 27, of Santa Ana, was arrested Thursday as he was exiting work in Irvine and booked on suspicion of sexual assault and kidnapping, according to police. He was being held on $1 million bail.

A woman in her 50s was sitting on a bus bench about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at MacArthur Boulevard and Bristol Street when a man physically attacked her before attempting to sexually assault her at the bus stop, Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The suspect had dropped his pants just as a bus pulled up, prompting him to flee, Bertagna said.

Police, who had released surveillance video and a composite sketch of the suspect, received information Wednesday night that led to identifying a suspect, Bertagna said.

The suspect, who was wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey, did not show a weapon in the attack, Bertagna said.

The victim worked with police to develop a composite sketch of the suspect.

On the night of the attack, Hernandez was at a nearby Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant at 3811 S. Bristol St., police said. The restaurant’s staff asked him to leave for “belligerent behavior,” police said.
