A man accused, with a 16-year-old boy, in an attack that wounded two people near UC Riverside and triggered an officer-involved shooting was charged Wednesday with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Christopher Romero Lopez, 21, was arrested with the teenager, whose identity was not released, on Sunday night in the 3300 block of Iowa Avenue, just off of Blaine Street.

Lopez, who is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Jail, is slated to make his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

The boy is being held at Riverside Juvenile Hall and is slated to appear for a detention hearing at the Riverside Juvenile Dependency Court.

According to Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback, the teen is the alleged principal assailant.

Railsback said the youth and Lopez got into a dispute with four people about 10:30 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot, and the younger defendant allegedly opened fire as a patrol unit passed the location.

Two of the victims were hit by gunfire, and officers went after the boy and Lopez, leading to an officer-involved shooting that did not injure either defendant, according to Railsback.

The pair surrendered without further incident.

The wounded victims were taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Railsback said.

A possible motive for the attack was not disclosed.

Lopez has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.

No details were available regarding the teen.
